The story

A true story from one family's Christmas

Young Hayes believes his family needs a Christmas tradition that is really about Jesus. One winter night he prays for an idea, and the next morning he has one: a birthday party for Jesus, complete with the best birthday cake in the history of ever.

With his brother Holt, his parents, and Teddy the Goldendoodle, Hayes builds a cake where every ingredient tells part of the Christmas story. The book is based on the Hill family's real tradition.

  • Rhyming story with full-color illustrations
  • Jesus' Birthday Cake recipe, each step tied to a Bible verse
  • Crafts, a birthday crown, and a Christmas traditions find-it game
  • Scripture guide and the true history of Christmas

The tradition

One evening. Four steps. A tradition for life.

Everything you need is in the book. Most families do it on Christmas Eve, but any night in December works.

01
Read the story
Hayes introduces his family and the search for a Christmas tradition that keeps Jesus at the center.
02
Bake the cake
Red velvet mix, white frosting, chocolate chips, and twelve purple candles. Each one carries a verse and a lesson.
03
Make the toppers
Craft the cake toppers and the birthday crown together, then decorate His cake.
04
Sing to Jesus
Light the candles, sing Happy Birthday, blow them out, and share the cake.

Scripture on every page

Every step of the recipe points back to a verse, so children learn the story of Jesus' birth while they bake, not just hear it read.

About the author

Jennifer A. Hill

Jenn taught school for 15 years, with students from 7 to 18, and one thing was true of all of them: they loved holidays and traditions. As her own two sons were growing up and learning the fun of Christmas, she wanted a way to teach them the true meaning too.

Baking a birthday cake for Jesus was already a tradition in the Hill house. Hayes came up with the party as a young child, and the family has done it every year since. The Best Birthday Cake in the History of Ever is that tradition, written down so other families can share it.

Jenn lives near Dallas with her husband, Heath, their sons Hayes and Holt, and Teddy the Goldendoodle. History of Ever Books exists to bring goodness back to the family table, one book at a time.
